Frequently Asked Questions
Common reasons for TFN verification rejection include:
- Vague use case descriptions: Generic explanations like "marketing" or "customer communication" without specifics about what messages you send and why
- Incomplete opt-in documentation: Missing evidence of how customers consent to receive messages, or using shared opt-in data from third parties
- Business information mismatches: Company name in messages not matching your registered business name, or using a residential address instead of a business address
- Missing compliance elements: Messages without proper opt-out instructions, no privacy policy, or using public URL shorteners (like bit.ly) in message content
- Prohibited content: Any messaging involving deceptive, fraudulent, or illicit content will be rejected
If rejected, you can resubmit after addressing the specific issues identified in your rejection notice.
Opt-in requirements vary based on your messaging type, but all require documented customer consent:
- Marketing messages: Require explicit written consent, typically through a checkbox or sign-up form where customers actively agree to receive promotional texts
- Transactional messages (OTP/2FA): Require informed consent when customers provide their phone number for account verification or security codes
Critically, opt-in consent must be specific to your business—you cannot use consent collected by another company or share opt-in data across multiple entities. Your confirmation message must include your business name, expected message frequency, standard messaging rates notice, and clear opt-out instructions (e.g., "Reply STOP to unsubscribe").
TFN verification requires several categories of information to authenticate your business and messaging use case:
- Business details: Legal business name, physical office address (not residential), business registration number or EIN, and website URL
- Campaign information: Clear description of your messaging use case, estimated monthly message volume, and the toll-free numbers you want to verify
- Message content: Sample messages you plan to send, including opt-in confirmation messages with your business name, message frequency, and opt-out instructions
- Compliance documentation: Links to your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, plus evidence of how you collect customer consent (opt-in)
Toll-free number (TFN) verification is a sender authentication process required by wireless carriers and the industry to ensure businesses are legitimate before they can send SMS/MMS messages. This verification protects consumers from spam and fraudulent messaging.
As of late 2023, unverified toll-free numbers are blocked from sending messages on major carrier networks. Without verification, your messages will not be delivered, and your number may be suspended. Verification helps establish trust and ensures your business messaging reaches your customers reliably.
